Key Nutrients for A Healthy Pregnancy

  • B Vitamins (including Activated Folate) are crucial to prevent birth defects and for toxin removal
  • Probiotics reduce baby's risk of allergies by as much as 50%
  • Calcium + Magnesium + Vitamin D build strong bones, joints and teeth and Magnesium specifically reduces the possibility of preeclampsia
  • Essential Fatty Acids are critical for baby's developing brain and retina cells

Baby’s health and development are shaped long before birth. The health of both the egg and sperm, the nutrients available and the toxins mom is exposed to during baby’s development in the womb make a huge impact on baby. Growing evidence supports that nutrient deficiencies, exposure to toxins and the degree of toxic burden in the mother impacts enormously the health of a developing baby. It is crucial to optimize nutrition, remove toxins and reduce toxic exposure pre-conception and throughout pregnancy. Only a couple of decades ago, it was a common belief that the baby would get everything needed from the mother, irrespective of what the mother ate, drank or breathed. We now know that this is far from the truth.

Probiotics:
Probiotics are good for your gut as well as your baby's. Studies have shown that moms who increase their probiotic intake during pregnancy can reduce their child's risk of allergies by as much as 50 percent and specifically in eczema, asthma and atopic dermatitis. Probiotics help digestion and nutrient absorption for mom and the more nourishment more gets, the more baby gets too. And, probiotics can help reduce the risk for postpartum depression. Preliminary research has found that taking probiotics can boost your ability to deal and cope. Your good bacteria in your vaginal canal is passed on to baby during birth. A good probiotic should contain at least 10 strains of bacteria and at least 10 billion active bacteria per capsule. We love Klaire Labs' There-Biotic Complete and have included it because it is a high potency 12 strain probiotic with over 25 billion CFUs and a proprietary delivery method to ensure maximum delivery of live microorganisms throughout the intestinal tract.

Prenatal Vitamins:
As for a taking a Prenatal vitamin? We all know that our food supply isn't what it once was. Processed and even fresh foods that have been grown in depleted soil or picked too early to be shipped long distances are lacking vital nutrients. For this reason we've included ProThera's Prenatal, a comprehensive multivitamin with trace minerals, extra vitamin D for bone development, high levels of B vitamins and activated folate to help prevent birth defects and remove toxins, and Phosphatidylcholine, a bioavailable form of choline that supports optimal fetal brain development as well as your liver function.

Extra Calcium and Magnesium:
Rest easy with an extra boost of calcium and magnesium. Most people are deficient in magnesium because of poor soil quality and overly processed foods. And, this mineral is vital while pregnant to help minimize the possibility of preeclampsia, reduce muscle cramps, helps you sleep better and helps with fetal circulation. Higher amounts of calcium are needed for your baby to have strong bones, joints and teeth without sacrificing your bones. Premier Research Labs' Coral Legend contains Sango Coral calcium which is easier for your body to absorb than other types of calcium and the calcium to magnesium ration is 2:1 for maximum nutrition and to promote a healthy alkaline pH.

Essential Fatty Acids:
And what about Essential Fatty Acids? Nordic Naturals Prenatal DHA provides beneficial EPA and DHA without mercury, dioxins or PCBs. DHA is critical for healthy baby brain and retina cells and EPA is a wonderful anti-inflammatory oil. Nordic Naturals Pro Omega packs 250mg EPA and 480 mg DHA in a two soft gel serving. We chose Nordic Naturals because it produces one of the most highly rated oils for purity, they use four types of wild caught fish - anchovies, sardines, pink and sockeye salmon and they don't use chemicals or high heat.

Here our our top tips for having a healthy pregnancy:

  • Eat a well-balanced diet focusing on healthy vegetables and fruits (organic when possible, check out the EWG's Dirty Dozen for a list of produce that should always be organic), grass fed meats and poultry and responsibly caught low mercury fish. Avoid all processed and refined foods whenever possible. Artificial colors and flavors, preservatives and sugar are not your friends.
  • Drink plenty of clean, filtered, non-fluorinated water.
  • “Go green” and avoid toxic cleaning products and personal hygiene products. Your skin is your largest organ and typical cleaning products and hygiene products contain hormone disrupting and toxic chemicals. Seek only natural brands with known ingredients.
  • STOP smoking and consuming alcohol. None of it is good for a developing baby in utero.
  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
  • Reduce and manage stress.
  • Exercise regularly. This doesn't have to be overly strenuous. A good thirty minute daily helps digestion,
  • Maintain a healthy weight. We all have seen the complications that can happen when someone is overweight and gets pregnant, how hard it is to carry the extra weight on top of that when you are pregnant and how hard it is to lose the extra weight after pregnancy.
  • Decrease your exposure to cell phones and all electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs). You can't see EMFs, but they are all around and disrupt your body on a cellular level.
